As outlined in the Migration Strategy revealed on December 11, 2023, Brighton College aims to provide you with details regarding the English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas that have been enacted by the Australian Government. All the information is referenced from StudyAustralia.

What is the reason for the adjustment in English language requirements?

The updated standards are intended to improve your experience as a student in Australia and, if you pursue a graduate visa, to aid in your success in the Australian workplace. Proficiency in English will promote your assimilation into the Australian community and understanding of your workplace rights and responsibilities.

Starting March 23, 2024, the revised English language criteria will apply to all submissions for Student and Temporary Graduate visas.

What are the modifications to the English language requirements?

For Student Visas:

The minimum required score for a Student Visa has been raised from an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).

For students undertaking an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) prior to their primary course of study, the minimum score has been elevated from IELTS 4.5 to 5.0 (or equivalent).

Students enrolled in university foundation or pathway programs providing recognized English language training must attain a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent), with the eligible courses listed on the Department of Home Affairs website.

No changes apply to students solely studying English through ELICOS, full-time school students, secondary exchange students, and postgraduate research students.

For Temporary Graduate visas (TGV):

The minimum score required for a Temporary Graduate visa has been increased from IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.5 for each component of the test (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

Holders of passports from Hong Kong and British National Overseas (BNO) are exempt from meeting this heightened English language requirement, with the requirement for this cohort remaining at IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.0 for each component of the test.

Applicants must furnish evidence of having completed an English Language test meeting these stipulations within one year prior to the visa application date.

Notice:

Additional details regarding the changes can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website. Alternatively, for a quicker response, you may email us at StudentSupport-BNE@brighton.edu.au.
